DAMA Canberra Branch is providing a full day of activity, split into two workshops – one for the morning, and one for the afternoon. Participants can enrol for either one or both workshops, although we recommend the morning workshop, that introduces some core concepts and data management skills, is useful preparation for the afternoon workshop. Organisers: Dr Jonathan Gray and Mr Andrew Smailes
Part 1: “Around the Wheel in Eighty Minutes”
9:00am – 10:30am
Presented by:
Dr. Jonathan Gray
Lead Partner
Anchoram Consulting
Background: In Jules Verne’s story Around the World in Eighty Days (pub. 1872), Phileas Fogg of London and his valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days. Their plan is to traverse the continents by rail, and to sail the oceans by steamship. Along the way, they have multiple mishaps and adventures, but ultimately succeed. Advances in modern technology have reduced this to around 92 minutes for the International Space Station to orbit the earth.
Tutorial: In this presentation we will take you on a tour around the DAMA DMBOK wheel in approximately 80 minutes. This provides a “high orbit” data literacy experience for the curious or aspiring data professional. For more experienced, practising data professionals, this content and approach will hopefully inspire and assist your own data literacy exploits in the workplace. A key takeaway from this session is a comprehensive slide deck of data literacy material that workshop participants can adapt for their own use.
This workshop presents some of the foundational practices of enterprise data management and is composed two parts:
Part 2: “Data Asset Registration”
11:00am – 12:30pm
Presented by :
Sarah Lauder
Director
Anchoram Consulting
Scenario: The Secretary has been summoned to the House to provide a demonstration to the Minister of the Aus-Wide Assets project. However, after 12 months and $60million, this project, led by Global Multinational Consulting Firm (GMCF), has failed to deliver anything demonstrable. In desperation, the Secretary emails all personnel to see if anybody has something that looks like a bit like the promised Aus-Wide Assets data service and actually works.
Activity: In this hands-on, interactive workshop participants (with assistance from the facilitators) will work together in small groups to build a working solution for the Aus-Wide Assets project. Programming skills are not required, but an aptitude for collaboration, a sense of humour, and a modicum of data literacy would be helpful. A key takeaway from this session is a collection of document templates, process descriptions, data models, and SQL code that participants can use to create their own scalable Data Asset Register.
Workshop A Learning Outcomes
Part 1: “Data as Fundamental Input to Capability (FIC)”
1:30 – 2:30pm
Presented by:
Ms. Lois Wake
Director Data Management and Capability
Department of Defence
Background: When a significant warfighting capability acquisition project kicks-off, the focus of media and public attention is typically on the big new ship, vehicle, or aircraft. Rarely is attention given to the (often mundane) questions of “Do we need a bigger runway?”, “Who’s going to do the maintenance?”, “What additional computing equipment do we need to support it?”. These are essential inputs to the acquisition and sustainment of new capabilities. Increasingly, data and its management, is an essential consideration for a successful project of this kind.
Tutorial: Whether you’re defending Australia’s borders, managing superannuation assets, or processing grant applications, understanding and managing your organisational capabilities, and identifying the role of data in realising these capabilities, should be a core consideration of how to run and improve your business. This deep-dive tutorial has two main objectives:
A key takeaway from this session is a comprehensive slide deck on the topic of data and organisational capability development that workshop participants can adapt for their own use.
Part 2: “Chief Data Steward- Thank God You’re Here”

Presented by :

Scenario: After many months of deliberation, the Executive have agreed to appoint a Chief Data Steward. Their role is to identify and implement a range of data management capability uplift initiatives across the organisation. These initiatives will directly address many of the organisation’s documented failings in data management, and target known problems, such as data governance in particular. These initiatives will deliver immediate uplifts in organisational performance, and they will be sustainable, with no additional increase in BAU expenditure.
Activity: In this interactive role-play workshop, participants will work collaboratively in small groups to identify and develop specific data management uplift initiatives to address the documented failings in this fictional, but realistic, government organisation. The workshop facilitators will assist each group in producing a short presentation for the Chief Data Steward to deliver to the organisation’s Executive. A representative from each group shall play the role of the Chief Data Steward and deliver their group’s presentation. A key takeaway from this session is understanding the complexity of designing and pitching a data management improvement initiative to an Executive audience. Through the role-play exercise, participants can better appreciate what kind of a pitch is more likely to succeed (or not).

Many agencies are at various stages of maturity and implementation, but with an average failure rate for these programs at greater than 50%, what lessons can be learned from similar complex agencies globally where business value is being delivered from Data dependent programs?
